Claiming for Pelvic Health Physio Costs

Published on 4 February 2026 at 21:19

As of October 2022, Pelvic Health Physiotherapists have the ability to apply for ACC cover for injuries sustained during childbirth. These are termed “Maternal Birth Injuries” and covers injuries such as perineal tears, prolapse, and injuries to the coccyx or symphysis pubis during vaginal delivery.

Your provider (LMC, obstetrician) can provide you with a code for your injury after the delivery. However, if they haven’t, a Pelvic Health Physio is able to apply for the majority of birth injuries listed by ACC. When you apply, you will have a "claim number" assigned for the injury (or injuries) sustained during the delivery. If approved, this ACC claim number can be used by eligible providers (such as pelvic health physios, gynaecologists, imaging facilities etc) to help with your costs of treatment.

For the majority of pelvic health physios you will still need to cover a ”co-payment”, so please check out their fees prior to booking if this is a concern. There are publicly funded pelvic health physios through the hospital system, and your GP, gynae, or obstetrician can refer you to public health, should you be eligible.

Southern Cross Easy Claim

At Beyond Pelvic Health you can also use Southern Cross Easy Claim, should you be a Southern Cross member. Easy Claim allows your provider to be paid directly by Southern Cross – no need to pay then claim with invoices, this is all done for you! We typically use “physiotherapy” or “6 months post op” (if you’ve had surgery).

If you want to know if your policy covers physiotherapy, it is best to contact Southern Cross directly.
