Bowel Dysfunction

Anorectal disorders cover an array of bowel dysfunction presentations.

Although pelvic health physiotherapy and conservative options are often highly effective in the management of anorectal disorders, it is important you are screened medically and it is standard that anyone experiencing a dysfunctional bowel has discussed their symptoms with a medical professional, for example a colorectal specialist or their GP, to rule out any medical concerns that may require attention. Once screened, there is often a lot that can be done to offer you an improvement, if not resolution, of your symptoms.

Bowel disorders commonly managed with pelvic health physiotherapy:

  • Obstructed defecation
  • Constipation
  • Paradoxical puborectalis
  • Pelvic floor dyssynergia
  • Hypertonic pelvic floor
  • Pre and post surgical management
  • Fecal urgency
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Flatus incontinence
  • Proctalgia fugax
  • Vaginal prolapse
  • Rectal prolapse and intussusception
