Post Partum Wellness
For many, the journey into Pelvic Health often begins during the postpartum period. At Beyond, we prioritise Postpartum Wellness. This journey often begins with the “Postpartum WOF” — an assessment or screening tailored for new mothers. While I also encourage women to participate in pregnancy WOFs, these sessions focus on different aspects.
The WOF assessment is guided by each woman's unique concerns, goals, and circumstances, but generally encompasses:
-
- Comprehensive posture and core assessment
- Evaluation for Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRAM) - the separation of abdominal muscles
- Screening for pelvic floor disorders, including prolapse, bladder, and bowel issues
- Assessment for injuries, such as levator avulsion
- Personalised exercise recommendations
- Guidance on continence, managing constipation, and long-term pelvic floor protection
An internal vaginal examination is routinely recommended during these appointments. This examination assesses several important aspects, including the presence of pelvic organ prolapse, the strength and coordination of pelvic floor muscles, and the healing process of any perineal trauma. It also evaluates your readiness to exercise from a pelvic floor perspective. If you have undergone a C-section, a postpartum assessment is still advisable. This evaluation will focus on your surgical wound, reinforcing your abdominal wall, and supporting your recovery after surgery. Rest assured, you have the option to decline the internal examination if you prefer.
ACC and MBI
ACC supports individuals dealing with Maternal Birth Injuries (MBI) by contributing towards treatment costs. If your claim is approved, they may also assist in the purchase of related items, such as dilators, wands, or pessaries.
